Where Do You Get Your Ideas?
Stephen King, On WritingIf you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.
I am never short of ideas for things to write. At any moment there are dozens of potential stories flying around my head and vying for my attention.
Like most writers, I get asked where these ideas come from? What seems normal to me appears strange and miraculous to other people. Maybe they think I have some magic ideas machine. I don’t have one of those, but I do have access to libraries and bookshops which amounts to much the same thing.
I firmly believe that I have so many ideas because I have read so many books. Everything I read mixes together in my head, blending with all the other things I have experienced and firing up my imagination.
Sometimes even I don’t know what mixture of thoughts has led to an idea, but there are influences that I can recognise in my writing: authors and books that have inspired me, helped form my style and preferences, and in some cases have stuck with me as cautionary tales of things I hope to avoid doing.
This section of my website is my way of acknowledging some of those influences. Hopefully, these posts will provide some insight into the thinking process behind my stories and maybe some of the people who have entertained and inspired me will do the same for you as well.
May your adventures be full
of mystery and magic
Paul
